Step 1: Find a corrugated cardboard boxA small box, or a flap off a larger box will be fine.
|
Check to make sure the box is corrugated, made with the wriggles in the middle
| |
Step 2: Make sure your cats approve the box![]() |
If the box has smells the cats don't like, reject it and find another
| |
Step 3: Find a clean glass jar with a lidA paper bag will work too, but you'll have to hide it somewhere your cats can't get it until it's ready
|
Step 4: Get (or grow) some good quality cat nipIf your cat doesn't respond to cat nip, try cat mint (Nepeta mussini) or Valerian root (Valerium officinalis)
| |
Put the nip into the jar
|
Step 5: cut small shapes from the corrugated cardboardAbout 2 inch squares seems like a good size to us, but experiment with larger or smaller shapes to see what your cat likes best.
| |
Step 6: Put the corrugated shapes in the jar with the cat nip and put the lid on![]() |
Step 7: Wait a few weeks![]() | |
Step 8: Take out a square and ask your cats if it is readyPut it on the floor, and see if they start sniffing it or playing with it - chances are they will take a few sniffs, walk around it once or twice, then ATTACK!!!
|
Sure, it's not as cute as a designer cat nip cigar, but it's inexpensive, environmentally friendly, compostable, and gets more play-time than most of the store bought toys in our household... give it a try and let us know what you think? PPuuuurrrrrsssss
