Cat Litter Joy

Cat litter box problems can cause a lot of stress in the feline human relationship, so we've collected a bunch of resources from around the internet to help you find solutions that work!

Step 1 - Understand the Problem

To solve a litter box problem, first you have to identify the causal factor. Article: 10 Reasons Cats pee outside the litter box from the 'Happy Litter Box' is a great place to start.

Step 2 - Eliminate medical issues

There are a few medical conditions that can contribute to litterbox problems (often described by vets as 'inappropriate elimination') including feline lower urinary tract disease, urinary tract infection, cystitis, obstruction of the urethra, diabetes, cognitive dysfunction, and hyperthyroidism. Particularly if your cat has any other changes in behaviour - such as eating or drinking more or less than usual, sleeping more or less, or any sign of distress - you will definitely want to get your vet to check your cats health. If the litter box problems continue, even without other symptoms of distress, a check up is probably a good idea.

Some tips to help you discover if your cats problems may be behavioural or medical:

If it's a medical issue you suspect, talk to your vet right away. If you have any concerns that there may be a behavioural cause, any change in the household around the time the problem started for example - you may want to consult a behavioural expert. Step 3 - Experiment to find a solution

Loads of stuff you can try... a good first step is to add another litter box. Get a new kind of litter box of a different type than the old one, and place it in a new location. You can use multiple boxes to test different kinds of litter, and particularly in a multi-cat household it's helpful to have more litter locations and box types too.
